The coastal and marine environment is essential for countries' growth and
development.
MARINE RESEARCHES AT THE FRC FOCUS ON MARINE RESOURCES SUSTAINABILITY, AND
CONTAIN SIX MAJOR THEMES:
The Fujairah Research centre conducts multidisciplinary applied research to protect
marine ecosystems and aquatic biodiversity and monitor the effects of natural and
human-induced pressures and hazards on the marine environment.
• Cetacean program.
• Turtle Rehabilitation.
• Coral reefs restorations.
• Marine environment monitoring.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE MARINE RESEARCH AT THE FRC ARE:
• To provide a long-term scientific data and knowledge base of the marine ecosystems
in Fujairah, in the Gulf of Oman.
• To carry out marine research that will contribute to environmental and resource
sustainability.
• To carry out exploration and monitoring of the biological, chemical, and physical
characteristics of the marine ecosystem.
• To study and understand the marine life that inhabits the waters of the Emirate of
Fujairah and protect them from threats posed by human activities, such as shipping
and fishing, and protect human activities from marine environmental risks.
• To conduct research on aquatic biodiversity.
• To carry out integrated marine observing and co-operate marine research vessels,
UAVs, ROVs, submarines, and underwater devices.
• To research the evolution of aquatic ecosystems.
• To research the effects of natural and human-induced pressures on the marine
environment.
• To carry out technology transfer, engage with community members and professionals
to promote sustainable marine economy and aquaculture.
• To research fisheries resources and the whole marine ecosystem and make relevant
information available to authorities for sustainable development.
• To assist and support the development and implementation of the Fujairah marine
conservation strategy.
• To act as a repository of information and specimens on the Fujairah marine
ecosystem.
• To collaborate with national and international institutions and organizations.
• To develop human resources in marine ecosystem preservation and sustainability.
The waters of Fujairah host a diversity of marine and coastal ecosystems with rich biodiversity that are under increasing
pressure from various human activities, and are of significant scientific, cultural and economic value to the emirate.
Therefore, the continued assessment of the diversity of marine like seashells, fish,
sea-dwelling reptiles, birds and
marine mammals is key to understand and protect the marine ecosystems.
The goal of this research is to study the behaviour, space and core areas which are used by
dolphins for resting and feeding.
